Former Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge Rakesh Kumar Jain has been appointed to oversee the inquiry into the Lakhimpur violence case by the Supreme Court of India on Wednesday.
Three other police officers including SB Shirodkar, Deepinder Singh and Padmaja Chauhan were also appointed to the Special Investigation Team by a bench of Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli.
“Justice Jain-manned commission will ensure impartiality and independence of the investigation, the investigation will be by SIT (Special Investigation Team) under Justice Jain and matter will be listed after the chargesheet is filed.”
The Uttar Pradesh Government agreed to the proposal of Supreme Court which suggested the appointment of a retired High Court Judge to monitor the probe.
The Court had expressed its dissatisfaction over the way the investigation was being conducted.
“The investigation is not going the way we expected….we are here to see that a proper investigation takes place. There is a need to appoint a retired High Court judge to monitor it without bias.”
Chief Justice NV Ramana said in the previous hearing.
Four farmers were killed in a violent incident where a speeding car driven by the son of Union Minister and BJP MP Ajay Kumar Mishra. And four people from the convoy were killed by the protesting farmers. The Supreme Court will next hear the case after the SIT completes the probe.
