A couple was sentenced to death four times for killing family members

A Special Court in Tamil Nadu convicted and sentenced a couple to four death sentences, a double life term, and an Rs six lakh fine for the murder of their family members in 2019. Goverdhanan said they died after the AC in the room exploded after he killed his parents and brother with the help of his wife by dousing them in petrol while they were sleeping and lighting them ablaze.

However, circumstantial evidence, a medical report, and a chemical analysis report all worked against the accused, who was found guilty and sentenced to death on three counts, according to Special Public Prosecutor N Vijayaraj. District Judge, Sessions Court, Poonamallee, for the sole trial of Bomb Blast Cases pronounce the verdict.

Goverdhanan had been requesting money from his parents for a long time in order to establish a new company, and he was irritated that his parents had ignored him. In May 2019, the victims were discovered dead inside their closed residence, and Goverdhanan blamed their deaths on an AC explosion, preferring to file a police report in this respect.

A DSP-level officer investigated the case, and it was subsequently revealed that the husband-wife combination had poured fuel on Goverdhanan’s parents and younger brother and set them on fire, Vijayaraj said, adding that one of the victims had cut injuries.

Factors such as the AC machine not exploding but melting, the accused escape unharmed, and other forensic analysis caught the pair, he added, adding that they sobbed when they heard the sentence. The life sentences issued are to run consecutively, and the court has also ordered that any time previously served be deducted.
