Palestinian terrorist group Hamas launched the huge rocket attack on Israel on Saturday, killing hundreds of people and taking hostages in a surprise assault that combined gunmen crossing into Israel with a barrage of rockets fired from the Gaza Strip.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared Israel’s stand to retaliate. He further added that “Our enemy will pay a price the type of which it has never known,” he said. “We are in a war and we will win it”.

Israeli officials said that, the Iran-backed group had declared war as its army confirmed fighting with militants in several Israeli towns and military bases near Gaza.

Hamas deputy chief Saleh al-Arouri told Al Jazeera that the group was holding a big number of Israeli captives, including senior officials. He said Hamas had enough captives to make Israel free all Palestinians in its jails.

The military confirmed Israelis were being held captive in Gaza and soldiers have been killed, according to N12 and Reshet 13 news outlets.

Hamas media displayed videos of what it said were bodies of Israeli soldiers brought into Gaza by fighters, and Palestinian gunmen inside Israeli homes and touring an Israeli town in jeeps reportedly been driven into Israel by the attackers.

In response, Israel military launches operation “Iron Sword” in which Israel Air Force has launched air strikes with dozens of fighter jets targeting the Palestinian militant outfit Hamas in the Gaza Strip in several locations.

Gaza health officials said 200 Palestinians had been killed in air strikes as bombardments hit deep into Gaza City, making clouds of black smoke spreading into the sky.

Reaction in geopolitical arena

U.N. Middle East peace envoy Tor Wennesland condemned the attacks on Israel, warning in a statement: “This is a dangerous precipice, and I appeal to all to pull back from the brink.”

“The United States unequivocally condemns the unprovoked attacks by Hamas terrorists against Israeli civilians. There is never any justification for terrorism,” said White House National Security Council Spokesperson Adrienne Watson.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X, “Deeply shocked by the news of terrorist attacks in Israel. Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims and their families. We stand in solidarity with Israel at this difficult hour.”

“I am shocked by this morning’s attacks by Hamas terrorists against Israeli citizens. Israel has an absolute right to defend itself. We’re in contact with Israeli authorities, and British nationals in Israel should follow travel advice,” said British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

“I strongly condemn the current terrorist attacks against Israel. I express my full solidarity with the victims, their families and loved ones,” French President Emmanuel Macron said.

“Horrifying news reaches us today from Israel. The rocket fire from Gaza and the escalating violence shock us deeply. Germany condemns these Hamas attacks and stands by Israel,” Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz said.

An adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei congratulated Palestinian fighters for the attack.

Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry called for an “immediate cessation of violence between Israeli and the Palestinians”, the state news agency reported.

Footage circulating on social media appeared to show clashes in city streets as well as gunmen in jeeps roaming the countryside. Currently situation is terrible, world expects peace with the complete eradication of terrorism all around the world.
