Supreme Court to Organize Special Lok Adalat

The Supreme Court of India marks its 75th year and is set to oraganize a historic six-day Special Lok Adalat from July 29.


The Supreme Court of India is set to organize a Special Lok Adalat from July 29 to August 3, 2024 to facilitate amicable settlements of suitable pending cases. This initiative marks the 75th anniversary of the Supreme Court, which was established on January 26, 1950, with the adoption of the Indian Constitution.

The Supreme Court in its official statement, emphasized the essential role that Lok Adalats play in the Indian judicial system. Lok Adalat are crucial for alternative dispute resolution, offering an informal, cost-effective, and rapid justice mechanism that is easily accessible to the general public. This approach significantly enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of the judicial process.

The Supreme Court’s statement highlighted that organizing the Lok Adalat aligns with its commitment to accessible and efficient justice delivery for all sections of society. By focusing on suitable pending cases, the court aims to expedite the legal process and foster amicable settlements.

CJI Appeals  for Participation:

The Chief Justice of India has issued a personal message on the upcoming Special Lok Adalat being organized by the Supreme Court of India from 29th of July to 3rd of August, 2024.

In his messege, CJI DY Chandrachud has issued a personal appeal to all citizens, lawyers and Advocates on Record to actively participate in the upcoming Special Lok Adalat. 

CJI Chandrachud emphasized the importance of this opportunity for speedy and acceptable resolutions of pending cases. He stressed that the large backlog of cases is a matter of concern for the judiciary and this initiative is a step towards alleviating this burden.

Focus Areas for Settlement:

The Special Lok Adalat will address cases with elements of settlement including matrimonial disputes, property disputes, motor accident claims, land acquisition, compensation, service and labour disputes. These cases pending before the Supreme Court, will be taken up to facilitate speedy disposal and ensure justice is delivered efficiently.

What is Lok Adalat?

– Lok Adalat is one of the components of Alternate Dispute Resolution system that delivers informal, economical and swift justice to common people. 

-Lok Adalats can be organized by the State/District Legal Services Authority or the Supreme Court/High Court/Taluk Legal Services Committee.

-The 1st Lok Adalat camp was organized in Gujarat in 1982 as a voluntary and conciliatory agency without any statutory backing for its decisions. It was given statutory status under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.

Cases Settled by Lok Adalat In 2024:

Lok Adalats organized under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), have an impressive track record. In 2024 alone, over 1.13 crore+ cases were settled in the 1st National Lok Adalat and  7.71 Lakh+ cases were resolved in the second National Lok Adalat. These figures underscore the potential of Lok Adalats to significantly reduce the backlog of pending cases and deliver swift justice.
