Ex- IPS Officer Amitabh Thakur, arrested by UP Police for ‘Abetting’ suicide of a woman.


Ex- IPS Officer Amitabh Thakur was arrested for allegedly spreading false information regarding a rapee case filed by a woman from Balian.

Amitabh Thakur, a 1992 batch officer who was forced retired in March this year was arrested for abetting rape survivor’s suicide.


The woman filed a rape case against BSP MP Atul Rai, in March 2019, she also alleged that Rai had made a video and threatened to circulate on social media. The MP had initially denied the accusations, but was later arrested and has been in jail for the last two years. The woman travelled to Delhi and did a Facebook live video before dousing themselves in some liquid and setting themselves ablaze.


The 24-year-old woman, who was raped by Rai, lost her life on the 24th of August and her 27-year-old friend succumbed to his injuries last week during the treatment. The woman had accused that Thakur warned her of the serious consequences and forced her to take back the registered complaint against Rai.


The State governmet also set up an SIT under UP Police Recruitment & Promotion Board (UPPRPB) chairman RK Vishwakarma and ADG, Women Power Line 1090 Neera Rawat to investigate all the aspects of the accusations made by the rape survivor and her associate. Thakur was arrested on the basis of the report of this SIT.


The FIR was lodged at Hazratganj Police Station and Thakur was arrested from his Gomtinagar residence, he resisted his arrested but later was arrested forcefully and then he was produced before the CJM Court, which sent him to jail till September 9.

A video of his arrest has gone viral on social media in which he can be seen resisting the arrest while demanding a copy of the FIR. Amitabh Thakur can be heard saying ‘Nahi Jaunga’ (I won’t go) repeatedly as police personnel force him towards their vehicle.

The FIR filed by the victim woman stated that Amitabh Thakur was circulating misleading facts and defiling her image by circulating audios linking her witnesses to criminals. The FIR also says that “After finding the contact number of Amitabh Thakur she made a call and asked why being an IPS officer he was bothering about her case filed against Atul Rai? She had also questioned Thakur how an internal report of the case made by police circle officer Bhelupur got available to him, to which Thakur did not respond.”


Senior SI Daya Shankar Dwivedi filed an FIR in which Thakur and Rai have been accused of abetment to suicide and other charges including public servant framing an incorrect document with intent to cause injury, threatening any person to give false evidence, public servant framing incorrect record with intent to save person from punishment or property from forfeiture, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, punishment for criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy.
